Jews sans frontieres: Aaronovitch analyses....me (Mark Elf)

Here's a telling extract from Mark Elf's response to David Aaronovich's sloppy piece in The Jewish Chronicle - 'Anti-Zionists Should Grow Up':
David Aaronovich:

Ah yes, say some readers, we are way ahead of you. Mr Elf and Mr Greenstein are archetypal “self-haters”. They are typical Jews who hate Jews (an organisation, come to think of it, which would complete the long, self-indulgent list of Jews For or Against This or That).

They wish somehow to lose their unwanted Jewishness by currying favour with the goyische welt. They like the Nobel prizes and the comedy, but they don’t want to be associated with the big noses and loud behaviour in Waitrose.

Mark Elf:

These anti-zionist Jewish groups that state their agenda in their name are at least being more honest than those that simply say that they are Jewish as if they are Jewish community groups. And it's a long time since I've heard those stereotypes about loudness and big noses and all and why would I not want my Jewishness?

Accidentally Aaronovitch has hit on to something with this "big noses" thing. Of course we object to racist stereotypes but we are perfectly comfortable with our Jewish identity.

We believe we should be able to live as Jews wherever we find ourselves. What we are rejecting about zionism is colonial settlement, ethnic cleansing, racist laws and relentless aggression. But see how Aaronovitch resorts to antisemitic stereotypes.

Muslims attacked in Scotland

I have it on very high authority that the number of attacks on Muslims in Glasgow and the west of Scotland has reached disturbing levels. The media have reported on about 30 to 40 such attacks but they are downplaying the true number for fear of exacerbating the situation. The real figure is considerably higher. This is a great shame as Scottish Muslims are beyond doubt the most integrated and least radicalised in the UK.

In a country still riddled with sectarian violence perhaps these latest attacks shouldn't surprise us. You can still get a good beating up here for being Catholic (or Protestant, come to that) so perhaps the Muslims shouldn't feel too bad about it, eh?

Belgium Says ISPs Must Protect Copyright
A court in Belgium has ruled that an Internet Service Provider bears the responsibility for stopping illegal file-sharing on its network. Although the ruling was made in Belgium, it relies on the E.U. copyright directive and may set precedent for the entire Union according to IFPI, an organization that represents the recording industry world wide.

Belgian courts have sided strongly with copyright holder in the past as well. In February, they ordered Google to stop copying Belgian newspaper headlines into their news and search indexes.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, AllofMP3.com which was killed off a few day's ago has been able to continue providing downloads for it's six million customers via the alltunes.com download client. Or you could use MP3City or the unfortunately named legalsounds.com (ahem) or, of course you could check out some of the tens of thousands of  sites providing music downloads. If you want to stay squeaky legal and your tastes are eclectic rather than pop/rock mainstream you could try eMusic.

Remember, illegal downloading is harming artistes. After all, when was the last time you saw a very wealthy rock star...?

Sick(o) note

Sicko Spurs Audiences Into Action
Sicko started; the stereotypical Texas guy sat down behind me and never stopped talking. He talked through the entire movie… and I listened. The first ten to twenty minutes of the film he spent badmouthing Moore to his wife and snorting in disgust whenever MM went into one of his trademark monologues. But as the movie wore on his protestations became quieter, less enthusiastic.

Somewhere along the way, maybe at the half way point, right before my ears, Sicko changed this man’s mind. By the forty-five minute mark, he, along with the rest of the audience were breaking into spontaneous applause. He stopped pooh-poohing the movie and started shouting out “hell yeah!” at the screen. It was as if the whole world had been flipped upside down.

This is Texas, where people support the president and voting democratic is something only done by the terrorists. Michael Moore should be public enemy number one. By the time the movie was over, public enemy number one had become George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy all rolled together.

When the credits rolled the audience filed out and into the bathrooms. At the urinals, my redneck friend couldn’t stop talking about the film, and I kept listening. He struck up a conversation with a random black man in his 40s standing next to him, and soon everyone was peeing and talking about just how fucked everything is.

Economist's View: What Bono Doesn't Say about Africa
Let's begin with those rampaging Four Horsemen. Do they really explain Africa today? What percentage of the African population would you say dies in war every year? What share of male children, age 10 to 17, are child soldiers? How many Africans are afflicted by famine or died of AIDS last year or are living as refugees?

In each case, the answer is one-half of 1% of the population or less. In some cases it's much less... That doesn't lessen the tragedy, of course, of those who are such victims, and maybe there are things the West can do to help them. But the typical African is a long way from being a starving, AIDS-stricken refugee at the mercy of child soldiers. The reality is that many more Africans need latrines than need Western peacekeepers — but that doesn't play so well on TV.
