It's people like Clegg that make me depressed!

Britain 'is true Prozac Nation'
"We must cut the number of anti-depressants prescribed by doctors. Pills must not be a crutch for the wider issues in our society which cause mental health problems."...Mr Clegg said he recognised there was a role for medication, but that it should not be the default option.
"We must cut the number of antibiotics prescribed in hospitals. Pills must not be a crutch for the wider hygiene issues in our hospitals which cause serious and lethal infections."

"We must cut the number of crutches prescribed by doctors. Crutches must not be a crutch for the wider issues in our society which cause problems with walking."

And he seemed like such a NICE man...

The UnCapitalist Journal - Did you celebrate Colin Powell Day?
Tuesday was the fifth anniversary of Colin Powell's speech to the United Nations Security Council to push for war with Iraq. Powell's speech, as we now know, was full of lies. His speech was entitled: Iraq, Failing to Disarm. He even had a nifty slide show for the attendees. Behind him sat George Tenet, then head of the CIA. No one fact-checked Powell, no one bothered to ask questions. It was accepted as fact by pretty much everyone. Bush had been beating the war drums for quite some time prior to Powell's speech and the MSM fell right in line. The MSM did their job by selling us the war, and they did it very well.
Robert Parry of Consortium news:
Five years ago, Secretary of State Colin Powell exploited his reputation for honesty and integrity to sell the American people on the necessity of the Iraq War. The day after Powell's United Nations testimony on Feb. 5, 2003, whatever skepticism remained in the U.S. news media evaporated. Anyone who still questioned the case for invading Iraq was dismissed as a fool, a traitor or - as Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen wrote - "a Frenchman."

The consequences of this group think have been devastating for the United States. Nearly 4,000 U.S. troops are dead; tens of thousands have been maimed; and much of the world blames America for the carnage in Iraq, where estimates of the death toll range from 150,000 to more than one million. Yet many Americans still shake their heads over the seeming mystery of why the widely respected Colin Powell would have joined in this national disgrace.

The answer to that question can be found in Chapter 8 of the book Neck Deep: The Disastrous Presidency of George W. Bush. The chapter is a brief biography of the real Colin Powell, from his days as a young Army officer in Vietnam to his rapid rise during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush to his iconic status by the time of his appearance before the United Nations. Throughout his career, the chapter reveals, Colin Powell was a rank opportunist, albeit one with great charisma and undisputed intelligence. This is an important reality for Americans to know - indeed it is history that they must know.
This was how Powell concluded his speech:
We know that Saddam Hussein is determined to keep his weapons of mass destruction; he's determined to make more. Given Saddam Hussein's history of aggression, given what we know of his grandiose plans, given what we know of his terrorist associations and given his determination to exact revenge on those who oppose him, should we take the risk that he will not some day use these weapons at a time and the place and in the manner of his choosing at a time when the world is in a much weaker position to respond?

The United States will not and cannot run that risk to the American people. Leaving Saddam Hussein in possession of weapons of mass destruction for a few more months or years is not an option, not in a post-September 11th world.

It all sounds depressingly familiar, doesn't it?

Villainous Practices

Facebook fraudster 'stole prince's ID'
Moroccan authorities arrested an engineer Wednesday for allegedly stealing the identity of the king's younger brother on the social networking Web site, Facebook, the state news agency said. art.moulay.rachid.afp.gi.jpg Prince Moulay Rachid, the younger brother of Morocco's King Mohammed VI, has allegedly become the victim of identity fraud. Fouad Mourtada, 26, was arrested in Casablanca for "villainous practices" in connection with the theft of Prince Moulay Rachid's identity, Maghreb Arabe Presse reported.
Don't you just love that offence?: Villainous Practices.

Please, please, can we have something like that here? It seems to perfectly describe the actions of some of our Westminster friends.

Fat fucks

Obesity 'may be largely genetic'
Becoming overweight as a child is more likely to be the result of your genes than your lifestyle, claims a study. University College London researchers examined more than 5,000 pairs of identical and non-identical twins. Their American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study found that differences in body mass index and waist size were 77% governed by genes.

An anti-obesity group said regardless of genes, a balanced diet and exercise were vital to good health. It is wrong to place all the blame for a child's excessive weight gain on the parents - it is more likely to be due to the child's genetic susceptibility Professor Jane Wardle University College London Children who are overweight are likely to be overweight or obese in adulthood, raising the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, stroke and diabetes later in life.
So where does the 'obesity epidemic', which is supposedly sweeping the nation, come from? Has there been some energetic and widespread lardarse copulation going on which we've missed?

Love is in the air

I got an email today pointing out that Valentine's Day was rapidly approaching and suggesting that it was a time for 'an extravagant gesture'.

And this is the picture included in the email showing just what what it suggested.

Ah yes, the scrapings from a retired Durham miner's lungs...No! Of course not.

The email was from The Fish Society and this is, of course, 'the unsurpassable experience of cavier'.

All I can say is if you really cannot surpass the experience of eating a mouthful of fish eggs then you really just don't get out enough. matey. And if The Fish Society think that image is going to boost sales of sturgeons roe for Valentine's Day they are very much mistaken.

Now if they'd used THIS caviar image...

Surging to failure

Truthdig - Scott Ritter: Iraq’s Tragic Future
Any analysis of the current state of the ongoing U.S. occupation of Iraq that relied solely on the U.S. government, the major candidates for president or the major media outlets in the United States for information would be hard pressed to find any bad news. In a State of the Union address which had everything except a “Mission Accomplished” banner flying in the background, President Bush all but declared victory over the insurgency in Iraq. His recertification of the success of the so-called surge has prompted the Republican candidates to assume a cocky swagger when discussing Iraq. They embrace the occupation and speak, without shame or apparent fear of retribution, of an ongoing presence in that war-torn nation.

Their Democratic counterparts have been less than enthusiastic in their criticism of the escalation. And the media, for the most part, continue their macabre role as cheerleaders of death, hiding the reality of Iraq deep inside stories that build upon approving headlines derived from nothing more than political rhetoric. The war in Iraq, we’re told, is virtually over. We only need “stay the course” for 10 more years...

Rather than offering a word-for-word renouncement of the president’s rosy assertions concerning Iraq, I will instead initiate a process of debunking the myth of American success by doing that which no politician, current or aspiring, would dare do: predict the failure of American policy in Iraq.

Cry me a river

Hillary Clinton 'tears up' at campaign event
Hillary Clinton apparently choked up and wiped her eye after a heartfelt introduction at a children's centre...she was listening to a doctor saying how proud she was that the young woman who had been wearing bell bottoms when she met her in 1972 was now running for the White House.
Yep, she overcame the biggest of handicaps, appalling dress sense, to make it this far. I'm welling up myself!

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...ME!

SproutBuilder: You've Got to See This Drag and Drop Widget Maker

SproutBuilder is going to explode the world of widgets on the web. This is far and away my favorite product I've seen at DEMO, not just this year but ever in the three years I've attended. The product is a drag-and-drop Flash authoring tool built on Adobe's Flex. SproutBuilder lets you build very sophisticated, multi-page widgets with media, analytics and more. In minutes. With ease.

Sprout is a cool , quick and easy way to build multimedia content and publish it anywhere in a form that can then be copied and spread by others. Add and mash up content and use the available templates or design your own. Then manage your 'Sprout' easily so that any changes are updated immediately at every location. Check out the short video on the Sprout site and then request a beta invitation. Seems a little flaky at the moment and I think the UI could be a lot more intuitive but it's early days and it IS, after all, a beta!
