Counting my blessings

I have been feeling a little under the weather lately and, naturally - being a man- that means feeling sorry for myself. But I was shaken from this self-pity by a phone call from an ex-colleague who told me that he had just been diagnosed with cancer. He has a fast-growing, aggressive stage 4a tumour of the pancreas which has spread to his liver and spleen.

The upshot is that his prognosis is grim. The median survival period is between 4 and 6 months, although there have been cases of much longer survival and of remissions.  Paul celebrated his 60th birthday in October. He is lucky enough to be able to get private treatment and is having a biopsy next week.  I wish him all the best. My thoughts are with him and his family.
